A drip coffee maker uses about 900-1,200 watts while brewing, about 1,000 W typical; the warming plate then cycles at lower average draw. Single-serve pod machines like Keurig pull roughly 1,400-1,500 W while heating.

Watts by model and setting
Most coffee maker models draw between 750 and 1,500 W while running; a typical one draws about 1,000 W. About 10 minutes of brewing at full power plus a warming plate that cycles: 1,000 W x 0.75 h x 0.5 = ~0.38 kWh/day. NV Energy estimates about 140 kWh/yr (~0.38 kWh/day).
- Brewing vs warming: the warming plate uses far less on average but runs for hours if left on
- Pod machines heat a reservoir quickly at high wattage and some keep water hot in standby
- Pot size: 12-cup drip makers use more than 4-5 cup models
- Auto-off timers limit warming-plate energy (for example, 4 hours on some Mr. Coffee models)
Running a coffee maker on a generator or power station
- Generator: at least 1,000 running watts. A generator rated 1,000 W or more covers it with room to spare.
- Power station: continuous output of at least 1,000 W. Pure sine wave output is the safe choice for motors and electronics.
| Power station capacity | Estimated runtime |
|---|---|
| 500 Wh | 0.8 h |
| 1,000 Wh | 1.7 h |
| 2,000 Wh | 3.4 h |
| 3,000 Wh | 5.1 h |
Based on 500 W average draw (running watts × duty cycle) and 85% usable capacity.
- No starting surge; a 1,000 W drip maker runs on most power stations of 1,200 W or more
- Single-serve machines need about 1,500 W, so check your power station's continuous rating
- Brew, then pour into a thermos and switch the maker off to save battery
- Run a gas generator outdoors only, at least 20 feet from doors, windows and vents; carbon monoxide from generators kills. Connect appliances with heavy-duty extension cords or a professionally installed transfer switch, never by backfeeding.

Questions people ask
How many watts does a Keurig use?
Most Keurig-style pod brewers draw around 1,400-1,500 W while heating water, and much less once heated. Check the label on the base for your model.
Can I run a coffee maker on a generator?
Yes. A typical drip coffee maker needs about 1,000-1,200 W, so a 2,000 W inverter generator handles it.
