How many watts does a blender use?

A typical blender uses about 300-1,000 watts, around 700 W typical, while high-performance blenders like a Vitamix 5200 (11.5 A) can draw about 1,400 W. The motor briefly surges at startup.

Watts by model and setting

Most blender models draw between 300 and 1,500 W while running; a typical one draws about 700 W. About 3 minutes a day at 700 W = 0.035 kWh.

  • Motor size: personal blenders are a few hundred watts; high-performance blenders 1,000-1,500 W
  • Load: thick, frozen mixtures make the motor work harder
  • Speed setting

Running a blender on a generator or power station

  • Generator: at least 700 running watts and 1,700 starting watts (running plus the 1,000 W start surge, the cautious way to size it). Check both numbers on the spec sheet. A generator rated 2,000 W or more covers it with room to spare.
  • Power station: continuous output of at least 700 W and a surge rating that covers about 1,000 W. Pure sine wave output is the safe choice for motors and electronics.
Power station capacityEstimated runtime
500 Wh0.6 h
1,000 Wh1.2 h
2,000 Wh2.4 h
3,000 Wh3.6 h

Based on 700 W average draw and 85% usable capacity.

  • Leave headroom for the motor's starting surge, especially with high-power blenders
  • Pure sine wave output is recommended for motors and electronic speed controls
  • Run time is short, so battery use is tiny
  • Run a gas generator outdoors only, at least 20 feet from doors, windows and vents; carbon monoxide from generators kills. Connect appliances with heavy-duty extension cords or a professionally installed transfer switch, never by backfeeding.

Questions people ask

Can a power station run a Vitamix?

A Vitamix 5200 is rated 11.5 A at 120 V (about 1,400 W), so use a power station with at least 1,500 W continuous and a higher surge rating.

How much electricity does a blender use?

Very little overall: a few minutes a day is a few hundredths of a kWh.
