How many watts does a pool pump use?

A typical 1.5 HP single-speed pool pump draws about 2,000 watts (2 HP pumps about 2,400 W). Variable-speed pumps can filter at only 75-220 W on low speed. Single-speed pumps also need a starting surge.

Watts by model and setting

Most pool pump models draw between 100 and 2,400 W while running; a typical one draws about 2,000 W. Typical value is a 1.5 HP single-speed pump (~2,000 W) running 6 hours a day: about 12 kWh. A DOE Building America case study measured about 12.6 kWh/day single-speed vs about 2.2 kWh/day with a variable-speed pump at low speed.

  • Single-speed vs variable-speed: halving pump speed cuts energy use to about one-eighth
  • Horsepower: 1-2 HP is common for in-ground pools; above-ground pumps are smaller
  • Daily run time: most pools need about 5-6 hours of single-speed filtration
  • ENERGY STAR certified in-ground pumps use about 20% less energy than standard models
  • Clogged filters and long plumbing runs raise the load

Running a pool pump on backup power

This is a 240 V appliance. It needs a generator with a 240 V outlet or a transfer switch or interlock installed by a licensed electrician; most portable power stations only supply 120 V.

  • A pool pump is a low priority in most outages; skip it to save fuel or battery for essentials
  • Most in-ground pumps are 230-240 V and hardwired; powering one needs a 240 V generator and a transfer switch installed by an electrician, never backfeeding
  • Few portable power stations can supply a 2,000 W 240 V pump for hours; a variable-speed pump at low speed is far more realistic
  • Run a gas generator outdoors only, at least 20 feet from doors, windows and vents; carbon monoxide from generators kills. Use heavy-duty extension cords or a professionally installed transfer switch, never backfeed a home outlet.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to run a pool pump?

ENERGY STAR says a pool pump can cost up to about $310 a year in electricity. A 2,000 W single-speed pump running 6 hours a day uses about 12 kWh daily; a variable-speed pump can cut that by 80% or more.

Can a generator run a pool pump?

Yes, if it has a 240 V outlet (for 240 V pumps) and enough capacity for the start surge; a 1.5 HP single-speed pump needs roughly a 5,000 W generator to start reliably.
