How many watts does an electric clothes dryer use?

A standard 240-volt electric dryer uses about 5,000 watts while heating, ranging from about 1,800 W for compact models to about 5,800 W. Gas dryers use only about 700-800 W for the motor and controls.

Watts by model and setting

Most electric clothes dryer models draw between 1,800 and 5,800 W while running; a typical one draws about 5,000 W. About one load a day: 5,000 W x 0.75 h x ~0.7 element duty (the thermostat cycles the heater) = ~2.6 kWh. Heat pump dryers use about 70% less.

  • Heating element size: most full-size 240 V dryers have a ~5,000 W element
  • Heat setting and moisture sensors that end the cycle early
  • Load wetness: higher washer spin speeds cut drying time
  • Heat pump dryers use about 70% less energy
  • Clean lint filters and vents shorten cycles

Running an electric clothes dryer on backup power

This is a 240 V appliance. It needs a generator with a 240 V outlet or a transfer switch or interlock installed by a licensed electrician; most portable power stations only supply 120 V.

  • Needs a 240 V source rated at least 5,000-6,000 W running; most portable power stations and small generators can't run it
  • Must be connected through a properly installed transfer switch or interlock; never backfeed through a dryer outlet with a 'suicide cord'
  • Run any generator outdoors, well away from doors, windows and vents; never in a garage or basement, because of carbon monoxide.
  • In an outage, line-drying or a gas dryer on a small generator is far more practical

Questions people ask

What size generator do I need to run an electric dryer?

At least about 7,000 running watts at 240 V to cover the dryer plus essentials, connected through a transfer switch.

How many amps does an electric dryer use?

About 20-24 A at 240 V while heating, which is why it sits on a 30-amp circuit.
